UWB phone requirements: Not all phones have UWB chips. iPhone 11 and later have U1 or 2nd gen UWB. On the Android side, only select Samsung Galaxy flagships (S21 Ultra, S22+, S23+, S24+, S25, Note 20 Ultra, Z Fold series) and Google Pixel 9 Pro (not Pixel 10) have UWB. How the privacy works: All three networks use rotating Bluetooth identifiers. The tracker broadcasts a BLE advertisement with a public key that changes every 15-30 minutes. Participating phones see this advertisement, encrypt the location with the tracker's public key, and upload it to the cloud. Only the owner's phone has the private key to decrypt the location. AirTag's 8-24 hour delay: Apple waits up to 24 hours before the AirTag starts beeping after being separated from its owner. This was originally designed to avoid false alarms during normal use (leaving keys at home), but it means a stalking victim could carry an unknown AirTag for a full day before any audio alert.
